February is the month of love! I think we can view this more broadly than romantic love as love can show up in our lives in many ways. I have been playing different love songs for Wednesdays with Wanda this month and when I played a show in Saskatoon I tried to think about different types of love and love songs. I played some songs about romantic love, the good and bad sides as well as some songs that I love.
I had a few lovely moments at the show in Saskatoon. A two year old and his dad come up to me and thanked me for sound check (that’s a first) as they wouldn’t be able to come back later. Then there were two fans in the crowd (this was a restaurant show) who showed their appreciation loudly and with thumbs up. Their appreciation was so appreciated by me. It moved into my heart space and warmed me. I also had a table of music friends who sang along and did some harmonies. Love and affection can come from so many places, parents, friends, children, lovers, colleagues… well the list goes on.
There is so much more than romantic love and yet as one friend said to me earlier this week, we will do almost anything for it. At the beginning of a relationship, it can be like a drug. Being in a couple appeals to our survival instincts I think. We feel safer when we are paired up. On a personal level I have worked out a lot of my own baggage in intimate relationships. There was a fourteen year period when I was in a lot of chaos. I had left a stable marriage and come out as a lesbian. This left me with a lot to process and it took me quite a lot of time to find my place in the world.
I am grateful for the people that are in my world. I hope that you are able to recognize the love that is in your life in whatever way it may arrive!
