I have recently heard that we overestimate what can be done in a year and underestimate what can be done in five years. I was thinking about this as I went up the elevator to my nursing job this morning! I began to reflect about all that I have been able to accomplish in five years.
Five years ago I was driving to Saskatoon every couple weeks to do pre-production work on my first album Awakening. That first album was released the following September. I had a lovely release. I also didn’t know anything about the music biz. In January of 2015 I went to a Tom Jackson workshop that helped me figure out what I wanted to do. I sat down and learned the piano parts for my songs and began to perform them live that spring. Then in 2016 I had several opportunities to hang out with songwriters and began to be a part of the songwriting community here in Saskatchewan. I began that year to dream of the next album and was lucky enough to meet Brad Prosko at a music conference and I knew I had found the right music producer for my next project. 2017 was a very full year of writing, then recording and releasing. I learned so much and am so grateful for the album Shifting Sands that came from that year of hard work. In 2018 I had more chances to perform and build my fan base as well as have a two week tour in Western Canada. I connected with several friends from my past and was grateful that my music helped build bridges with these old friends.
I am very grateful that I am a part of the supportive music community here in Saskatchewan and I have found a supportive women’s music community online, the Female Musician Academy. https://www.facebook.com/groups/WOSCommunity/ I have met other women there who are trying to build their music business and I have learned a ton. Another helpful habit that I try to remind myself of often is to not compare myself to others and stay in my own lane. There will always be people who are more or less accomplished then I am. Realizing what I have done helps keep me balanced !
May you reflect on all that is good in your life. I encourage you to sit down with a journal and see what you have done in the past five years. What would you like for the next five? Oh I guess I have questions for myself to answer !
Yours in music and creativity,
Wanda G
